Search giant Yahoo! sold the domain name contests.com for $380,000 during the live domain name auction at the Domain Roundtable conference in Washington, D.C.
The contests.com auction bidding started at $150,000 and quickly received 15 bids from 3 different bidders, two live and one online, moving the price of the name up to its final selling price of $380,000. It is speculated that Yahoo! acquired the name when the company purchased broadcast.com for $5.7billion in 1999. The premium domain was a last minute addition just a few days before the auction began.
The sale of contests.com comes on the heels of Yahoo!’s sale of wp.com for an undisclosed amount to WordPress.
The Domain Roundtable auction was hosted by Aftermarket.com and featured 70 live domain auctions and 100 extended online auctions. Included in the auction were several domains auctioned off to benefit the Internet Commece Association (ICA), including castaway.com, which went for $9500.
After contests.com, the 2nd highest selling domain name was WeightLifting.com, which went for $19,000.
The Domain Roundtable extended auction continues online now.
