Yahoo! sold wp.com for an undisclosed amount to Automattic,the parent company of WordPress, the widely popular blogging software. According to Matt Mullenweg of Automattic, the company has been trying to acquire wp.com from Yahoo! for the past five years. While the sale price remains undisclosed, it will likely be included in Yahoo!’s quarterly report.
In addition to wp.com, Automattic also purchased Blo.gs, a ping-updating service for bloggers. The Blo.gs service was purchased by Yahoo! in 2005, but the company never did much with it. Despite this, the service has an active and large user base. According to Mullenweg, Automattic will give Blo.gs “a refres, while continuing its reputation for reliability”.
