The US Department of Commerce agreed to extend Network Solution’s contract as a domain name Registrar until the year 2000, in exchange for the company’s release of ‘ownership’ of the current whois data they maintain on 2.5 million domain registrants. The contract provides room for competition from other Registrars by the second quarter of 1999.
