The .tel TLD landrush begins today at 10am EST with names being registered on a first-come, first-served basis. The .tel domain “provides organizations of all sizes a named listing with unlimited contact information in a global directory, accessible from any device connected to the Internet.” This would allow Internet users to find up-to-date contact information for .tel owners and give them the ability to contact them immediately. It is speculated that .tel has the “potential to become a phone book for the Internet.”
While the .tel TLD could prove quite useful, it comes with a high price tag, requiring a minimum 3-year registration during landrush, with an annual registration fee of $116 per year.
A Registrar offering the new TLD claims that their pre-orders for .tel are running 4x ahead of their .asia pre-orders.
