Network Solutions Gets Congressional Put-Down

When the House Commerce Committee gathered on Thursday, the big question was “Can ICANN control the Internet?” The non-profit organization was set up to oversee the domain name system, and was supposed to have brought in competition for the registration process, which is still under the monopolizing company, Network Solutions. The majority of concern was over Network Solution’s refusal to acknowledge ICANN as a legitimate authority, along with their claim of ownership of the domain name data-base. Jim Rutt, CEO of Network Solutions, tried to minimize their importance in the registration process by calling the new privatization plans “small change matters.”
