Tips: Alternatives
to Traditional Domain Names (contd.)
Country Sub-Domains
If your
domain name is taken, or your country does not exist in the top level domain registry, you
might wish to consider registering a country sub-domain via one of the many companies set
up for such a purpose.
A country
sub-domain is basically a sub-domain of a country.com name. These sub-domains offer a
cheaper alternative to a .country domain name, but do not carry quite the same weight.
Basically,
the sub-domain relies on the company owning the country.com domain having fast servers, as
the sub-domain names will not appear in any lookup tables around the Internet. Also there
may be some differences in the rules of ownership between yourname.country and
yourname.country.com domain names. Please read the terms and conditions of individual
registries very carefully before registering a country sub-domain.
An example of a country sub-domain registry is
NomiNation, which administers the uk.com sub-domains . NomiNation aims its
services at people whose domain name has already been registered under .uk, or who want a
cheaper [20 pounds/year] alternative.
